Francine IRAGI Mukotanyi is an associate professor in the Faculty of Economics and Management at the Catholic University of Bukavu and Director of the Expertise Centre on Mining Governance (CEGEMI). She is a socio-economist, specialising in rural economics and development studies. Since 2011, her research has focused on the socio-economics of artisanal mining, with an emphasis on the livelihoods of artisanal miners and the links between artisanal mining and agriculture in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Her recent research focuses on the promotion of non-toxic fish farming in mining areas in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, social protection regimes in artisanal mining, the livelihoods of actors involved in the construction materials value chain, the causes and consequences of the proliferation of street vending in the DRC and artisanal fishing on lakes Kivu and Tanganyika in the eastern DRC.
