Wilma S. S. Nchito

Wilma Nchito is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. She is a Senior Researcher at the Centre for Research and Urban Planning (CURP). She is an urban geographer and currently a Co-Investigator involved in documenting the role of Universities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Having previously studied the changing nature of formal mining linkages and infrastructure in today’s Zambia, Wilma is interested in studying the impact of artisanal mining on local infrastructure. The assumption is often that informality does not help in creating infrastructure. Her broader research interests are Participatory slum upgrading; Applied urban research; Urban informal sector; Urban food systems; tourism; cities and climate change; sustainable urban development; transdisciplinary research; Research Management; Urban water and Sanitation; Small town development; Urban flooding; Urban informality and renewal; Border land dynamics; Agricultural value chains; Solid waste management; African Diaspora in African, and Transport planning. She has participated in the development of the National UrbanisationPolicy and has published on various topics.
